Polyphonic Ringers | Vintage Monophonic Ringers

The initial experiments of device to device communication required some way for both invloved parties to be able to establish that a connection had been made. What was needed was an audible tone that both parties could hear and would indicate that a connection was available and they could then commence to dial the device to initiate communication.

Once one party had begun the process of communication it was necesarry to have one of the devices make a specific sound that would indicate someone was calling. This became known as the "Ring" because the phone actually contained bells that would be struck by small hammers. The early phones, therefore, "rang". In the early 20th century people would say "The phone is ringing!" and someone would answer as soon as possible in order to recieve the call.

In the early 1980's when wireless phones started to invade the worlds major cities the devices, although large by todays standards, did not contain any bells but instead had microchips which created a "tone" that signalled an incoming call. These became known as "ringers" due to their electronic nature.

With the advance of technology the telephone devices were able to create more and more combinations of sounds. Suddenly the "ringers" were "monophonic" meaning they were a simple combination of a minimum number of electronic tones and then "polyphonic" meaning certain devices could reproduce a larger number of tones together to create virtual imitations of existing songs and melodic creations.

With the rapid expansion of technology we suddenly were able to have cellphone devices that could emit audio combinations as "ringers" that precisely copied and imitated multi-layered audio such as voices or realistic sound-effects. These became known as "realtones" or "truetones". They were realtones and truetones bacause it fully described the realistic playback of the tone coming across to the wireless device.

Now in the 21st century, when everything is advancing at an accelerated pace, the languages of the world tend to melt and cross polinate into one new vocabulary, we have added a new term from the central-cities of North America: "moantones". Moantones are simply the time-line evolution of the ringtone of yesterday meeting the sexual present. Once the realtone met the truetone it was only a matter of time before it met the erotic idea of vocal sexuality and became the moantone. From the moantone we can see the growth and expansion of such terms as groantone, the cartone, the hi-fi tone, the bangtone or anything with a tone! Sure! What counts is the source of where you get their tones, the quality of their phone and what it sounds like when it rings!

First came the dialtone and you knew you were connected.
Then came the ringtone and you knew you were wired up.

What is a moantone? Isn't it obvious?
The term moantone was born in the inner-city region of Toronto when a group of downtown "working girls" started adding erotic sexually explicit audio clips to their cellphone ringtone collection. The girls playfully called these moantones and it soon spread like a wild-fire in an August haystack! Each different moantone would be assigned to the incoming call from their clients so the ladies knew right away who was calling.
The ringtone is evolving. Where we omce only had the ringtone now we have the truetone and the realtone and now comes the moantone.

Remember when their music came on vinyl and having a tattoo was a sign of rock and roll rebellion? Well those days are gone chumps! Long gone like those annoying cell phone ringers that plagued us in the early part of the 21st century. You know the ones, the cheesy midi version of the Simpsons theme song or the lame polyphonic ringtone by 50cent or Beyonce. That is history like yesterdays sports page holding last nights leftovers! Combine this with images and mini-movies pure adult content delivered over their cellphone and suddenly it makes perfect sense to take a phonecall at dinner!
